119 I ONCE DID KNOW A FARMER
Version A was communicated in 1938 by Mrs. Dorothy Woodin, Harrison, who had learned the song from her father.
A
i I once did know a farmer, A good and truthful soul, Who labored round his stock and barn And round his cottage door. He had an only daughter; To win her I did try, And when I asked him for her hand, Then this was his reply:
Chorus
O treat my daughter kindily,
And keep her from all harm,
And when I die, I'll will to you
My little stock and farm.
My house, my home, my sheep, my plow,
My horses, stock, and barn,
And all the little chickens in the garden.
2 The old man has consented, And married we will be, And own the little stock and farm, And live in harmony. I'll strive to keep the promise That the old man asked of me. TTwas, "Take my daughter for your own, And treat her kindily."
