i I once did know a farmer, A good and truthful soul, Who labored round his stock and barn And round his cottage door. He had an only daughter; To win her I did try, And when I asked him for her hand, Then this was his reply:

O treat my daughter kindily,
And keep her from all harm,
And when I die, I'll will to you
My little stock and farm.
My house, my home, my sheep, my plow,
My horses, stock, and barn,
And all the little chickens in the garden.
